So I had a mini-contest on Twitter - I asked people why they loved Richard and Kahlan and my favorite response won a free Terry Goodkind book (in honor of his support for our campaign). If you didn't get a chance to participate (or didn't want to because you already had the books), I would love to hear your responses now! Leave a comment with why you love them, how their love has touched you, etc. And be on the look out for a future contest.. I will broaden it a bit by asking why you love Legend of the Seeker and may give away DVDs! (Just be on the look out for tweets about it)
Responses to why people love Richard and Kahlan:
@moorebabs - never has there been a love so pure or giving, they truly are each others soulmates and live only for the others happiness
@Yamil - Because he loved her through time. (1st season reference) And also because they're willing to sacrifice themselves for each other.
@iLoVeL0TS - for me..RICHLAN is one of the best couple that gives the true meaning of RESPECT and LOVE..
@Elma_Herrera - I find that one would have to try not to love R&K. ones falls for them so evasively that its hard to pin-point when it happens. R&K are transcendent and so is their love. not only do they love so fiercely (not only each other but the ppl around them) but they also have kickass moves that places the cherry on top of the perfect sundae they are. <3
@jackieedwards2 - just because they showed us how to fight and care for everyone around them as well as each other
@mommieswstyle - their strength & dedication, and ability to rise above the obvious tempation
@faeriehallie - Because their love is completely unselfish.
@auntlolo73 - other than the fact that they are all kinds of awesome, R/K have a relationship that is based on mutual trust, respect, acceptance, and understanding. Their unfaltering love enables them to overcome any obstacle placed in their path and also to accept that they each make mistakes, however well meaning they may be. Their relationship isn't based on the physical, though that attraction is there, but on the true love of the individual and understanding of each others soul. They are soulmates, the other half of the same, the yin to the others yang.
@tamoshan - I love K&R because they love Cara ;)
@TheAshley713 - I love R/K because they let me see that know matter what theres always something to fight for and to never give up in life! Either if its life, love, freedom, or to help some else out when they need it. Theres always good to be done thats why I love R/K! =)
@chaosclyve - I <3 R&K because their story is of a dangerous forbidden love that evolves into a transcending oneness that defeats ult. evil
@veroriguez - ♥ R&K bc they have showed us that love is all that matters &, as they say, love conquers all =D
@drebombay - R&K: they are the epitomy of love. It's always there and grows regardless of what is done or said. They both know the truth.
confessor from Confessor and Seeker Society forum - I love Richard and Kahlan because when you read about them, you feel like you know them, and they seem real, not just storybook characters. They are kind, caring, and you can tell they love each other. You don't even have to say they love each other, by they way they act, you already know. They would do anything for each other. These two are the most thoughtful, kind, helpful, and loving people I have ever read about. This is why I love Richard and Kahlan.
@TenMorgue - ((i luv em bcuz their luv is a model 4 how evry1 shuld luv their partnrs; unconditionally & whole-heartdly!!))
@Jess021 - I love R/K because of the devoted love they share with each other through thick and thin and through space and time
@lotsfan616 - They stand for what is right and just, and they fight unconditionally for it. They are 2 incredible people to look up to.
@pamQ - I love Richard and Kahlan because they showed me "true love" that is far from the cheesy, hackneyed, so-called "love" that the media cash cows fling at us. In all honesty, before being introduced to The Sword of Truth, I usually disliked love stories because I have always thought that popular media and literature have abused "true love": they've made it overly melodramatic and unrealistic. Richard's and Kahlan's love is different. The love that they demonstrated in the books and the show is both perfect and imperfect. "Perfect" in a sense that it is pure and without malice--love in its purest form; "imperfect" in that they were always torn apart, either by their own rash decisions, or through the unfortunate circumstances that shadowed them... imperfections that made them human. Richard and Kahlan showed me a believably human and real depiction of true love set in the realm of fantasy, which is the most remarkable thing.<3
@tivabeliever - I love Richard and Kahlan because they are so sweet and kind to each other. Even in the worst of times, books and shows, they are always there and never back down. Their love is unfailing, even when Richard was surrounded by many women during his Wizards Training. Just the way they are always thinking of each other, even when they are rather close is so sweet and heart wrenching. Just how they went to shoving creatures of cliffs to constantly trying to save them is so epic. That's why I love Richard and Kahlan.
@xkaranna - Well, in the books I love how all consuming R/K's love is, how passionate it is, but it never crosses that line into 'unhealthy obsession' (thank god!). Everything Richard does, it's always 'How will this affect Kahlan if I do this? Will it keep her safe? Will it make her happy? Will it protect her?' It's always Kahlan first, then the rest of the world. If he saves the world, it's because Kahlan's in it.
The same goes for Kahlan, Richard showed her a different life through their love, a better existence and acceptance of a part of herself she never allowed before. They both give each other so much, and it's just a wonderful, real, and mature relationship that really is what everyone hopes to find.
As for the show, on a shallow level, I love how CUTE they are together. I'm constantly amazed at how adorable they can be with each other and yet I never want to gag or cringe at the "sappiness"! There's such honesty there, you can't help but love and appreciate it.
I also really love the equality in their relationship. It's truly a partnership and both of them trust the other implicitly. Not just in the way of "cheating" or lying, but in respect for their mutual responsibilities and duties. Richard not only knows of Kahlan's immense capabilities, but he ADMIRES her for it. Richard is only ever proud of her. He never holds her back, only encourages her (which is unfortunately rare). And of course, in turn, Kahlan puts all her faith in him, which is to a fault actually, but I love them for that too. Their relationship isn't flawless, but it's powerful and really encompasses what love *is*.
@Splendificus - The Blue eyes of course! I dig Richard too, cause he means the Blue eyes are somewhere nearby :P
@mse_63 - I absolutely ADORE R/K because again and again they manage to prove that when two people love and trust each other deeply enough, they can always pull through, no matter what comes in their way -> Temple of the Winds - nuff more said;)
WINNER:
@christinelive - I fell in love with Richard and Kahlan before I even began the novel- when I read the dedication to Wizard's First Rule. It says: "To two very special people, Richard and Kahlan, for choosing me to tell their story. Their tears and triumphs have touched my heart. I will never be the same again." I knew then that these amazing characters were going to endure so much, and they were going to do it together. As I got to know them, I got to love the dichotomies within their characters: Kahlan is feared by everyone who encounters her, yet she carries the burden of Confessor with grace and respect. Her fragility as a woman counters her persona as a Confessor and the power she holds as the highest rank in the world; Richard, on the other hand, has the characteristics necessary to every hero. He is quick and intelligent, learning fast as he goes and reasoning his way out of situations. He is, again, a perfect contrast to the Sword he carries because he has a knack for befriending every creature that he encounters but is forced to carry the burden of death. Together, they are a force unparalleled. I love them because they make us care. because they make us feel. and because they make us take this journey with them of tears and triumphs.
